How To Know If Your Water Broke

Even if you are not a first-time parent, you may not be familiar with the sensation of your water breaking. In some cases, patients do not even feel their water breaking, which can create a confusing experience.

So, how do you know if your water has broken? While at-home water break detection tests are available, it also helps to understand the symptoms.

Liquid Flows

One of the first things you are going to notice if your water breaks will be liquid. Some people experience a small trickle of fluid rather than a large flow of liquid, which can be confusing. Many people expect what they see in the movies: a lot of liquid. This simply doesn't always happen.

You may think that the liquid is actually urine at first, but if you change your underwear and wait a few moments, fluid that continues to flow may be indicative of broken water. You are not able to get the liquid to stop, even if you try to stop the flow of urine.

Check the Color of the Liquid

When your water breaks, the liquid may be clear or a very pale yellow. This is amniotic fluid, and it may be an indicator that it is time to get to the hospital if you are not there already. If the fluid looks or smells like urine, it may very well simply be urine. Usually, amniotic fluid has no smell.

Examine Your Body for New Sensations

Some people explain that they feel somewhat uncomfortable when their water breaks, as if there is some sort of pressure being placed on the area. You should not feel any pain, however. If you experience pain, you should call your doctor immediately to ensure labor is progressing safely.

You May Feel Contractions

Contractions are not always indicative of the water breaking. You may have contractions well before your water breaks, so this is not always the best measure to use. You may notice that your contractions become closer together after your water breaks. This indicates you should head to the hospital.
